Probable tactics and training

City are likely to return to a 4-3-3 more familiar against the Toffees.

Pep Guardiola tinkered with the formation against Arsenal and it worked well, but the staff needed for this evening could dictate a different XI.

Aymeric Laporte seems ready to play on the left back with Stones and Nicolas Otamendi also selected.

Fernandinho will be in front of the midfield with Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva.

Bernardo and Sane will accompany Sergio Aguero.

STARTER FIRE: Sergio Aguero leads City in the pack after only 50 seconds.

Everton have the worst common record for goals conceded in the Premier League this season. It will be interesting to see if the champions will try to exploit their Achilles heel.

Can the Blues climb to the top?

Given Liverpool's successive draws against Leicester City and West Ham, City has an unexpected opportunity to rehabilitate the Reds tonight.

The goal difference of the Blues is +6 better than that of Liverpool. So a win at Goodison Park would give City the win for the first time since Chelsea's loss on Dec. 6.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp's team would have a game in hand, but with the pressure expected to increase in the coming weeks, it adds a new dimension to the title race.

Liverpool will have a chance to regain first place against Bournemouth on Saturday, 24 hours before the Blues face off against Chelsea in what might be another fierce clash.

One thing is certain: matches that seemed to be able to go only on a paper prove everything but walks in the park for all the leading clubs.

This is a trend that will surely continue until the last day of the campaign – but it seems to me that tonight's trip to Goodison is a "must-win", if only to take advantage of the recent slippage in Liverpool.

Statistics and milestones

The Toffees have beaten City only once in the last 11 Premier League – a 4-0 win at Goodison Park in January 2017.

If City wins, it will be the first time that we have won two consecutive wins at Goodison since 2013/14. The double in the Premier League would also take place only for the second time.

The Toffees have taken 11 points since early December – only Huddersfield Town and Fulham have won less

Sergio Aguero could become the league's top scorer tonight if he scores at least two goals.
