Singer / songwriter native of California HER. maybe just 21 years old, but his honest and thoughtful R & B approach, with his personal lyrics and slow jam-back rhythms of the '90s, reveals an old soul. Her sweet yet powerful voice offers a glimpse of love and identity with vulnerability and a lot of righteous feelings.
While his music is communicative, and even his nickname is the acronym for "having everything revealed", the rising star still operates with an air of mystery. She chose to reveal minimal details about herself and, always depicted behind big sunglbades, seems to be asking us to focus on her music first.
We recently met the talented multi-instrumentalist who, as a first-time nominee, won five awards at 61st GRAMMY Awards. (In addition to being nominated for all kinds Best new artist and Album of the year categories, she is also nominated for the best R & B song, the best R & B performance and the best R & B album. HER., the album in consideration, is an album combining her two EPs and B-faces (she has not released her first album yet).)
During our conversation, H.E.R. told us how grateful she was for everything she had done so far, growing up in a musical home, that it was important to keep "real people" around you and what we can expect hear on his next album.
"I did not think I would go so far here, so I'm focusing on altitude and I'm really dreaming bigger."
How did you hear about your first appointment to GRAMMY? When you learned that you could win five awards, what was your initial reaction?
Oh my God! There were a lot of tears. I was with my tour team; we had all woke up early after a show. In fact, I was really sick and a little sad and depressed the day before. My manager gave us the news and it completely changed my mood and attitude. It made my day. I immediately called my mother, my father and my sister. I was on the cloud nine.
Your five nominations include Best New Artist, Album of the Year and Best R & B Album. What does this recognition mean to you?
I have the impression that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. It's so easy to question your art, even what you do, to question your path. But it's such a confirmation for me; "You are exactly where you need to be, you are doing all the right things." It's amazing, I have the impression of having found my goal and I realize it. I am so blessed.
Is there a moment when you were younger that made you want to make music? Are there other artists you admired who made you want to do R & B?
Music was for me a given, like going out of the womb. At parties, I was always at the center of attention, singing, dancing and playing instruments. I have never made the following decision: "I am going to make music". My dad had a group that was rehearsing in our living room, so all the instruments were there and I turned to them very young.
My mother was trying to find talent shows and festivals for me in the San Francisco Bay Area, even when I was only seven or eight years old because she knew I loved doing it. It was never a career goal or what I was planning to do after graduation. I just did it. It came naturally super for me.
An artist I really respect is Alicia Keys. Because she plays the piano and sings, and that I like the instruments so much, she certainly paved the way for a young black musician and a young black woman like me who wants to play instruments and find my voice in the industry. She played a big role.

I've never really thought about being an R & B artist. R & B is a bit of the core of everything from rhythm and blues. I grew up listening to a lot of soul and blues, so these influences shine in me. When I started doing my first project, HER. Flight. 1It was so honest. It has a R & B influence of the 90s, but you could feel the soul reflect my past and my provenance.
"Focus" is one of your songs for a GRAMMY; the lyrics are very personal and are really relatable. Can you talk about what this song represents for you and how, in your opinion, does the honesty of your music help you connect to fans?
My music is my diary. When I write a song, that's what I feel right now. With "Focus", I was afraid to leave him in my first project because he was so personal to me and so vulnerable. I was really young when I wrote it and I just felt like: "put down your phone, pay attention to me." It's crazy to see how much this has been deepened and affected many women; women who have even five or ten years of marriage and are able to tell that little feeling that I felt then.
What is your favorite artist role?
I do not know if I prefer to be an artist. I like being on stage and playing with my band. I also like to rehearse with them and create the show, it's always fun. But nothing is better than being in the studio and being able to pull myself together and recover my feelings. The studio is the perfect place to confront my feelings and make the most of them. I love being in this space and creating, doing what I love, doing art.
Apart from music, how do you feel that the success you've had in the past year has influenced or changed your personality?
I have learned a lot about myself through my music and the way people perceive it, and the goal is that success does not change me. I feel like the same person that when I published it, I just grew up. Success has certainly taught me a lot about keeping real people around you and on purpose. This has taught me about the people and things you really need to ensure your success, and the importance of keeping those things around you and blocking everything else, and staying positive.
Also, seeing the world has given me a better perspective of life. The fact that I can travel around the world to do what I love is such a blessing. I've learned that traveling is such an important thing. there are so many beautiful things and we worry about such little things.
What do you expect most from GRAMMY? How will you celebrate if you win?
It's going to be like a movie. The fact that I'm appointed for five years [awards] is right, wow. And the fact that people will really see me, because as you know, I have not revealed my personality too much. This will be my first red carpet!
After the GRAMMY, I just want to be with those I love and remember. I like to think of memories and all the things that brought me up to this point, so it would be a party, look at old videos and old pictures of my home town. .

What's on the horizon for H.E.R. Can we expect new music this year?
Absolutely. I'm going to release a first album, which fascinates me. It's crazy because my project nominated for Album Of The Year is the combination of my two EPs. So, there will be the new album and I will do more tours. Plus, I'm starting a foundation called Bringing The Noise to help bring back music to schools that have lost their music programs. I am really excited to be able now to help people.
There is so much going on this year that I can not even tell you. Like to play Coachella! I did not think I was going to get so far so early, so I focus on the altitude and dream really bigger.
