Everything happens at Netflix in May 2019

Spring is at the rendezvous and, with the new season, an updated selection of Netflix broadcasts trying to turn reboots of the same old stories into cooler and more diverse stories. Of Riverdale (the adaptation of Archie Comics from the 1950s in its third season) to The icy adventures of Sabrina (which just aired the second part of season 1 last month), modern television series are trying to explore new angles in familiar situations. For example, the Netflix software Charm reboot, which arrives in May (exact date to be determined) explores what happens when Piper, Phoebe and Prue are reinvented under the name of Mel, Maggie and Macy, three Latin sisters who embrace new magical powers.

At the same time, some excellent films finally arrive on Netflix, including Snowdrop May 1st and Moonlight May 21st. Fans of science fiction dystopias should watch Snowdrop for the first or the tenth time. It is led by the impressive performances of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and Kang-ho Song. (Given the cast, this could make a good hunter Avengers: End of the game.) Moonlight Janelle Monáe and Mahershala Ali, winner of the Best Film Award, tell the story of a young homobadual black man who arrives at Miami's age. For those of you who have not seen the film in the original cinemas, this one is now easily accessible and it resists many times, even for those who have watched it.

Netflix has also exploited a formula that really works in its original Asian content: explore unusual topics. Abyss, which lands on Netflix on May 6 and airs two episodes a week for most versions of Netflix, follows a prosecutor who was reincarnated after an accident. She's not the only one. This new Korean fantasy explores reincarnation, an idea that is commonly found in Buddhism and Hinduism, and what happens when people actually remember their past lives. This is not the theme of the most typical drama. Amnesia, car accidents or recurrent illnesses are more common conspiracy instruments in Korean shows.

Then there is revisions, which looks like an artistic Tumblr blog, but is actually a sci-fi animated series set in a Shibuya from the year 2388, where hostile cyborgs threaten humanity.

In terms of current events, many new Netflix offerings have thoughtful comments to offer on the present moment. ReMastered: The lion's share, destroy the house, and See you yesterday all offer redemption in a certain way. ReMastered, a documentary series from Netflix, spends its latest episode following the attempts of a white South African journalist to bring the American music industry to pay royalties to a black South African living in poverty, original author from the famous song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Shoot down the house documents the lives of four Congress women, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as they campaign for change.

Finally, the product produced by Spike Lee See you yesterday offers a science-fiction solution to one of the most tragic events in our crumbling justice system: when cops kill unarmed black men, often without serious consequences. The new Netflix movie, which arrives on May 17, imagines two Brooklyn teenage prodigies, CJ Walker and Sebastian Thomas, who build time machines to rescue CJ's brother, who was killed by a police officer. It is the ultimate convergence of speculative fiction and social justice that may well transform gender.
