Former Reading striker Dave Kitson said Tyrone Mings deserved at least a 10-match ban for his alleged Nelson Oliveira stamp.
The incident occurred Saturday in the draw at the Royals with Aston Villa at the Madejski Stadium.
The FA decided to do nothing more despite loud calls from former referee Mark Halsey and Oliveira's wife, among others, demanding a heavy suspension from Mings.
And Kitson plunged into the debate by saying that the central defender of the Villa should have faced a big ban. He also asked why VAR was not used to help arbitrator Geoff Eltringham in this case.
Write in his column for The sunKitson said, "This is the second stamp of Mings, after having stamped his head on [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic (in 2017), his punishment was a five-game ban.
"Surely, a full investigation and, if found guilty, a stamp ban striking Oliveira from 10 matches should have been the minimum penalty this time."
"However, as the referee saw the incident, the FA can not act for fear of undermining any of theirs.
"And yet, we now have value-added resellers precisely because arbitrators make wrong decisions, whether they have seen them or not.
"So it makes sense to think that if the referees are wrong, they can also be mistaken for stamps."
Kitson, a member of Reading's winning group in 2006, will be inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in March.
The striker scored more than 60 goals during his two stints with the club, though he's remembered with great tenderness for his 22 goals during this season where the Royals have accumulated 106 points.
Aged 39, who has also played for Sheffield United, Portsmouth and Stoke City among other clubs, he hopes the Royals will win their battle against relegation this season and restore a factor of well-being between players and the fans.
"Hopefully Oliveira will recover from his terrible injuries very soon and will score goals that will help my old club stay awake because I love to come back to Reading," he added.
"But as in any club, the experience is always more enjoyable when the team is doing well and the fans are happy.
"At the end of March, I was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame, largely for our 2005/06 season, when we beat almost every Championship benchmark.
"We won the league with an incredible record of 106 points and, as far as I know, we did it without having to score the face of one person."
