Explained: What the extension of Charlie Lakin's contract means to Michael Morrison and the EFL situation

[ad_1]

The city of Birmingham confirmed today that Charlie Lakin had obtained an extension of contract.

The teenager was held until the summer of 2021, the club retaining another option.

The announcement comes as the Blues await the outcome of their disciplinary action for alleged violations of EFL's financial fair play rules.

The EFL revealed that it had blamed the Blues last summer, since then the club is working under an imposed trading plan.

The goal is to ensure that the Blues effectively manage costs to align with the rules of profitability and sustainability of the league.

This means that there have been checks on player contracts – with Lakin and Michael Morrison arguably the two most pressing names.

However, their cases are not the same.

Lakin's contract comes after appearing enough team teams to trigger a clause in his current contract. After playing nine games this season, he was entitled to an extension of the contract.

If there is a mystery, it is that Lakin played for the last time in November, but it took almost four months for ratification.

What's happening at Blues?

One would tend to wonder if a resolution of Lakin's situation means that there is movement on Morrison.

After more than four years at Blues, mainly as captain of the team, Morrison's contract expires at the end of the season.

Without being too dramatic, the 31-year-old could still have eight games as a blues player.

That's not what he wants and, as I understand it, that's not what Birmingham City wants, but the business plan remains and, like so many others, the future of Morrison is in outstanding.

That's because Morrison requires a new contract rather than extending an existing contract and that the Blues are not in a position to be able to distribute new contracts.

Just another example of the unsatisfactory situation in which the club is located.

And I will read absolutely nothing in the moment chosen for this announcement – the Disciplinary Committee will discuss at the same time on a possible deduction of points.

Lakin 's contract has been bubbling under the surface for several weeks, the fact that it is confirmed today is more a coincidence than a sign of any relaxation in the position of the company. ; EFL.
