The families of some 17 miners who died after the explosion of a mine in Gbani, in the far east of the region, are demanding compensation from the Shaanxi Mining Company.
At a press conference, the families represented by a certain Bismark Zuma declared that 61 people in total had lost their lives because of the company's activities.
"It is reported that none of these deaths were compensated by the company," he said.
In the latter case, the 17 miners died after an explosion on Wednesday after the mine company dynamited explosives to break the ground.
The gas released by the explosives has strangled the miners underground. The miners allegedly encroached on the Shaanxi concession on the blind side of Chinese society.
Some of the miners died in hiding while others died while they were being treated at the Upper West Regional Hospital.
Some survivors of the mine explosion are still in the hospital being treated.
At the same time, the police arrested five people in connection with the mining accident.
S addressing the press, the families of the deceased miners also accused the mining company of deliberately killing their parents.
A member of the bereaved families claimed that the mining company had added a toxic chemical to the explosives before it exploded, claiming that it was the toxic gas that had killed the miners underground.
"The corpses you can see now, some have dependents and are breadwinners now that they are no longer the caregivers.
"We are therefore asking for adequate compensation to care for the families they have left behind," said another bereaved family member, echoing the views expressed by many at the press conference.
Mr. Zuma claimed that Shaanxi lacked basic safety equipment and endangered the lives of community members through its activities.
"There is no blasting in our communities to inform our people before blasting and no vans to announce an eventual explosion," Zuma said.
