The Ghanaian Armed Forces rejected calls from Tema residents demanding the transfer of the weapons depot from the Camp Michel military base following a fire that declared Wednesday morning.
A fire took possession of the weapons depot and, as a result of it, triggered explosions of dangerous ammunition in nearby homes.
Witnesses said they heard loud noises shortly after huge flames invaded the armory of the Tema military base in the Greater Accra area.
Residents demanded the removal of the ammunition depot, saying that military installations were a danger to their habitat.
… This has confirmed our call for all these years to the government to do something about this arsenal … and hear the cry of the people who have settled here, "said Anthony Nukpenu, MP for the region.
However, addressing Joy FM, director of public affairs for the Ghana Armed Forces, Colonel Eric Aggrey Quarshie refuted the residents' claims.
He explained that the military installations were built in the 1960s and that, at that time, "the whole area was completely covered. No matter who over there came to meet the depot, "he added.
Aggrey Quarshie asked if the army was planning to move, but that's not the solution.
"No matter where you go, people will settle," he said.
He said the most important thing was to make sure "the security measures there are up to par."
He added that, without the good security practices put in place at the depot, "the situation would have been different".
The colonel also rejected reports that the army has been expelling residents of the area, saying it was not the army's mandate.
He did, however, express concern that most residents are invaders.
