A flawless stayPaul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, two Manchester United team-mates, did not get along at all in Australia, despite frenzied media coverage suggesting they did. Are you surprised at all?
"POGBA & LINGARD BUST-UP" was the headline on the last page of Tuesday's Daily Mirror newspaper. "Lindelof makes peace after spitting during a walk".
The cover, which was not limited to the Mirror, was the result of a few seconds of video footage published on the official Twitter account of Manchester United following the arrival of the team in Australia for the summer tour of the club.
These few seconds out of context showed Pogba and Lingard in what appeared to be a exchange somewhat animated, before Victor Lindelof puts his arms around the first.
It has been interpreted as an attempt by the Swedes to remove Pogba from an imminent downfall. There was literally no way for anyone to look only at those few seconds to find out what's going on, but a "burst" has gained ground because of the saga of transfers hanging over Pogba.
If there had been something serious, we could have expected that Anthony Martial and Eric Bailly would at least recognize the fight that would have occurred behind them. They do not have it. By walking almost behind Pogba, Romelu Lukaku does not react either.
Coverage was widespread, but repetitions of words like "apparent," "appeared," and "apparently" suggested that no one really knew what was really going on.
The riddles, and it was guesswork, produced a scandal big enough to make headlines.
It turns out that, now that a more complete clip has made its way onto social media, it was nothing anymore.
Not visible in the original sequence, Lindelof quite quickly dropped Pogba, there was no confrontation, then a big smile is drawn on the face of Lingard when he burst out laughing .
Oh, horror!
