LONDON – The English Football Federation has accused Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey of improper conduct after appearing to perform a Nazi salute on a photo posted online by teammate Max Meyer.
The FA alleges that the gesture was "abusive and / or insulting and / or inappropriate and / or discredited the game". The ruling body adds that it was an aggravated breach of its rules because it included "a reference to ethnicity and / or race and / or to religion and / or beliefs ".
Hennessey was near the bottom of the table at a team dinner on an image released earlier this month by Meyer in an article on Instagram. He denied having made a Nazi salute, saying that "any resemblance to this kind of gesture is pure coincidence".
Hennessey said he "waved his hand and shouted at the person taking the picture and at the same time continue to put my hand on the mouth to keep the sound going."
