Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has weighed in the debate surrounding the injury to Reading striker Olive Oliveira this weekend.
The Portuguese striker had to undergo surgery after being trapped by Tyrone Mings in the second half of the 0-0 draw at the Aston Villa Championship at Madejski Stadium.
Replays show that Mings appeared to score Oliveira's face as he followed up to the player, even though referee Geoff Eltringham had taken no action.
Halsey, 57, spoke to social media to give her perspective on the clash between the two players.
The experienced official, refereed in the Football League and Premier League between 1997 and 2013, said Mings deserved a retrospective ban from the Football Association (FA) as a punishment.
He said on Twitter: "I can not help thinking that this incident is worthy of a suspension of more than three matches.
"I can not imagine that a footballer of any level whatsoever strikes deliberately on the head of another player, only Tyrone will know it.
"It will be interesting to see if the FA takes action."
Halsey added, "If the FA decides, Mings has a case to answer [for]they will send pictures to three former referees who will see the incident and decide if Mings should be charged. "
Oliveira, who is on loan in Reading for the rest of the season, went to the hospital after the match and has since undergone a facial operation.
Defender Mings, on loan to AFC Bournemouth for Villa, is excused on social networks after the match.
The central defender was involved in a similar incident with Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in March 2017.
He was later charged by the FA with violent driving and sentenced to a five-game ban.
And Halsey thinks Mings could have avoided his opponent in both cases.
"I thought it was deliberate for Zlatan a few seasons ago," he said.
"It seems equally preventable.
"Something is wrong in the department of the floor with Tyrone."
