The number of active users, a key measure of the industry, was slightly higher than expected by badysts.
Facebook reported 2.32 billion monthly active users and 1.52 billion daily active users during the fourth quarter. According to Bloomberg estimates, badysts forecasted 2.32 billion active users a month and 1.51 billion active users a day.
The social media giant earned $ 2.38 per share, up from $ 2.18 on Wall Street.
"Our community and our business continue to grow," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a statement. "We have fundamentally changed the way we manage our society to focus on the most important social issues, and we are investing more to create inspiring new ways to connect people."
Facebook's shares climbed 7% in aftermarket exchanges. While the title was beaten during a tumultuous year, Facebook shares rose about 22% from their lows on Christmas Eve.
Investors also watched the monetization of advertising, including the WhatsApp platform and Instagram Stories. At the last earnings call in October, Zuckerberg was excited about growth opportunities via Instagram Stories.
According to Facebook, mobile advertising revenue accounted for 93% of advertising revenues for the fourth quarter, up 89% from last year.
In addition, the company reported that about 2.7 billion people were using Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger each month.
The troubled social media giant has been under a lot of pressure over the last year, as scandals over data privacy and misinformation continue to tarnish feelings.
