Shahnaz Rahmatullah, a famous South Asian singer, died in Bangladesh after suffering a heart attack.

The 67-year-old singer's career spanned five decades and encompbaded a number of genres, particularly national songs.

She had retired from the singer profession about seven years ago and died in her Baridhara residence in Dhaka, the capital.

Rahmatullah became a singer in Dhaka in the mid-1960s and began her radio career at age 10. She sang many patriotic songs during the 1970s liberation war.

Bangladesh's war with Pakistan was aimed at the independence of West Pakistan. East Pakistan, originally called East Bengal, believed that power was concentrated in West Pakistan.

Both parties entered the war in March 1971 and, nine months later, the conflict ended with the secession of East Pakistan, which became the independent state of Bangladesh.

"The voice of the nation"

In 1992, Rahmatullah was awarded the Ekushey Padak Award, the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh.

In 2006, Shahnaz's four songs were on the BBC's list of the 20 greatest Bengali songs of all time.

The first funeral prayers took place at the mosque in Baridhara Park. She left the husband, a son and a daughter.

Tributes from Pakistan and Bangladesh poured into social media, reminding her of "gifted singer "and the"voice of the nation ".
