Will the Super Bowl LIII be the best all-time day for SpongeBob SquarePants fans?
Stephen Hillenburg, who created the animated sponge, died in november. Since then, fans have invited the Super Bowl organizers and half-time hosts Maroon 5 to honor Hillenburg's character in the next game.
An online Change.org petition requesting that SpongeBob's song, Sweet Victory, be performed at the halftime show has collected more than 1.1 million signatures to date. Why this song? In the episode of season 2 where it appears, SpongeBob performs the song with a fanfare at Bubble Bowl, the equivalent of his universe in the Super Bowl. He really shouts, too, a true style of power ballad.
A representative of Maroon 5 did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But on January 13, the band tweeted a Super Bowl themed video, and SpongeBob made an appearance.
Further evidence that the Super Bowl could have a spongy influence: Many sites have shared what appears to be a series of Facebook posts from Rodger Bumpbad, which Squidward expresses in the series, announcing that Squidward will present the half-season. Bumpbad messages are not public and he did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
