Accra, April 3
GNA – Food and agriculture
(FAO) and the Government have signed the General Assembly of
Program Framework (CPF) 2018-2022.
The document
developed in consultation with key ministries, departments and
Agencies as well as stakeholders have three priority areas.
These are
Sustainable agriculture is the driving force behind agroindustrialisation and economic growth,
Sustainable management of natural resources for a safe, secure and productive environment
environment and building resilience and reducing vulnerability and poverty
reduction.
Dr. Abebe
Haile-Gabriel, FAO Regional Representative for Africa, speaking at a meeting
PCF signing ceremony for Ghana, announced its intention to provide guidelines
for the implementation of priority areas.
Dr. Abebe, who
signed for FAO, stated that the design of the PCF had been informed by
government policy documents and also it has been aligned with the development of the UN
Deputy Partnership Document.
As a member of
ceremony, FAO also signed two project agreement documents with the governments
as part of the PCF implementation process.
The regional
The representative for Africa said that the first project was smallholder badistance.
farmers, especially cocoa-based agroforestry, to work on recovery
of their lands degraded by the threat Galamsey with funding from the Japanese
government of $ 800,000.
He said the
another project focused on conservation agriculture and integrated pest management
and soil fertility with financial support of $ 400,000 from FAO.
Dr. Abebe said
both projects were intended to help make the CPF agreement a reality.
"In total
we signed two projects worth $ 1.2 million, "he added.
He congratulated
government and other stakeholders for the development of the country's CPF.
He said that FAO was
attached to the framework with emphasis on providing technical badistance
and it was a demonstration that FAO was taking concrete steps in terms of
the implementation of the PCF.
Dr. Jule Nura,
Secretary of State for Agriculture, congratulated FAO leaders for their leadership
its continued support to the sector.
He said the
project with conservation agriculture and pest control aligns perfectly with
the government's own priority.
He expressed
it is hoped that the technical staff will learn a lot about the areas of pests
management and conservation agriculture, with the government attempting to do so
before but did not succeed.
