The Beijing envoy to the EU has launched a fierce attack on the "slander" and "discrimination" that Huawei and other Chinese companies in Europe have faced, warning that efforts to exclude China from 5G mobile phone projects would be doomed to failure.
Ambbadador Zhang Ming warned that any attempt to limit the involvement of Chinese technology in future European high-speed 5G mobile networks projects could have "serious consequences" for co-operation economic and scientific world.
The diplomat's remarks were heard in an interview in Brussels, highlighting the growing tensions between Europe and China, but also possible areas for joint action against the rise of US unilateralism.
"There is no point in slandering, discriminating, pressuring, coercing or speculating on anyone," Zhang said of the cybersecurity concerns of Chinese companies that have in Europe while the United States has called for an increasingly tough line.
Equity markets in the Asia-Pacific region were mixed Monday ahead of this week's trade talks between the United States and China. Japan's Topix lost 0.7% and CSI 300 0.2% in mainland China, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, the pound sterling was slightly lower at $ 1.3194 before this week's vote on Prime Minister Theresa May's "Plan B" deal on Brexit. The currency climbed 2.5% against the dollar last week for its best week in 16 months.
Futures contracts are pushing the FTSE 100 to open 0.4% lower and the S & P 500 should also open 0.4%.
