A study conducted by a team at the University of California at Irvine (UCI) found that fasting affects circadian clocks of the liver and skeletal muscle, prompting them to reorganize their metabolism, which can ultimately improve health and protection against aging. diseases.

The circadian clock works in the human body and its organs as intrinsic timing to preserve homeostasis in response to the changing environment. And, although it is known that food influences the clocks of peripheral tissues, it was unclear until now how lack of food affected the functioning of the clock and ultimately affected the body.
"We discovered that fasting influenced the circadian clock and the fasting-induced cellular responses, which together contribute to the specific temporal gene regulation of fasting," said lead author Paolo Sbadone-Corsi, Professor of biological chemistry at the UCI. "Skeletal muscle, for example, seems to be twice as sensitive to fasting as the liver."
The research, detailed in the Cell reports Journal, was performed on mice subjected to periods of fasting 24 hours. During fasting, the mice showed a reduction in oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and energy expenditure, all of which was completely suppressed by a new diet, which corresponds to the results observed in humans.
"The reorganization of gene regulation by fasting could prime the genome to a more permissive state in order to anticipate future food intake and thus drive a new rhythmic cycle of gene expression. In other words, fasting is able to reprogram a variety of cellular responses, "said Sbadone-Corsi. "Therefore, an optimal fasting timed would be strategic to positively affect cellular functions and ultimately benefit the health and protect against age-related diseases."
This study opens new avenues for investigation that could lead to the development of nutritional strategies to improve human health.
