FDA Releases List of 41 Harmful Cosmetics in Ghana

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public against the use of some 41 cosmetics containing harmful substances, including mercury, hydroquinone and steroids.

The FDA has also directed producers of harmful products to remove them from the market with immediate effect.

The directive issued by the FDA following investigations into the Ghanaian market revealed that cosmetic products contained harmful substances that contravened the Standards Authority Act, 1973 (NRCD 173), and sections 111 (c) and 113 (c). b) Public. Health Act, 2012 Act 851.

"The companies whose products contain these substances (mercury, hydroquinone and steroids) were invited to immediately recall their products from the market as they pose a potential health risk," the FDA said in a statement signed by its chief of communications and the media. Department of Public Education, James Lartey.

"These substances are not permitted in cosmetic products because of their undesirable side effects resulting from prolonged use.The adverse health effects badociated with these substances include, but are not limited to: damage permanent neurological diseases in children (prenatal and neonatal, toxicity, fertility problems, conbad malformations, gastrointestinal toxicity, hepatic toxicity, skin infections, skin cancer and hyperpigmentation / Ochronosis ".

Products include Perfect White Beauty lotion (clobetasol, hydroquinone) and DIMD Limited's Day By Day Men perfect body lotion (Betamethasone) and Banare's Ahoofs Foundation (Mercury, Hydroquinone) Body Cream Limited and Fair & White So White Brightening and Moisturizing Body Milk Perfector (Hydroquinone) produced by France Mod Limited.
