Electronic cigarettes and vaping products face an "existential threat" in the US if their use by young people continues to increase, warned the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Scott Gottlieb spoke Friday at a public hearing in Maryland on the elimination of "electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products" among young Americans, while the agency was threatening stores selling cigarettes to minors and seized thousands of documents. Juul Labs, maker of a popular vaporizer, during a surprise inspection of the company's headquarters.
"I'll tell you that. If the use of youth continues to increase and we see a significant increase in use in 2019, in addition to the dramatic increase in 2018, the entire category will face a threat existential, "said Gottlieb. "Some of these products may be out of date until they can successfully go through the regulatory process. I think the stakes are so high. "

The commissioner added that the possible elimination of electronic cigarette products "would be a blow" for adult smokers, who, he added, "could potentially benefit from these products".
Mr. Gottlieb referred to the Juul brand when he spoke about the rise in the use of e-cigarettes among high school students: "Indeed, the ubiquity of this product has become so entrenched so quickly that she gave rise to her own verb – julling. "
The company responded with a statement denouncing the use of the electronic cigarette among minors, calling it "totally unacceptable" and "directly opposed to our mission of eliminating smoking by offering existing adult smokers a a real alternative to combustible cigarettes ".
"We are doing everything we can to implement our action plan to limit youth use," said Ted Kwong, Juul Labs spokesperson. The hill. "It has not changed since we announced our plan in November."
