The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public against consuming unhealthy products following reports that fish washed up on the beach at Osu Castle have been sent to various markets.
According to the Authority, it has also started laboratory investigations to determine whether these fish are safe to eat or not.
Fish were found along the shores of Osu Castle beach on Friday.
Likewise, more than 80 mammals are thought to be melon-headed whales were washed up on Axim-Bewire beach in the municipality of Nzema Est on Sunday.
This attracted many residents, some of whom collected them either for consumption or for sale.
But the FDA in a statement advised the public to refrain from such acts.
“Since Friday, April 2, 2021, the FDA, in collaboration with other government agencies, has investigated the issue of various species of fish washed up on certain beaches and addressed the issue of various species of fish.

Meanwhile, to prevent stranded fish from entering the food chain, FDA inspection teams have been dispatched to fish markets, including the Osu Mandela Market at the Korle Municipal Assembly- Klottey.

The Authority has also stepped up its education and public awareness on quality parameters and signs of fish contamination in fishing communities and fish markets.
Regional FDA offices along the coastline in the Central and Volta regions have also been alerted and are replicating similar efforts in cities along the coast.
“In this regard, the general public is urged to be guided by the freshness of the eyes and the redness of the gills of the fish they seek to buy. Stranded fish usually show signs of popped and unclear eyes, dull colouration of the gills, bloating around abdominal areas and / or possible oozing of odorous liquids, ”the FDA further advised.
“The public is advised to report all suspected cases of possession or sale of these stranded fish to the FDA or local authorities. The consuming public should also be wary of fresh fish and recently smoked fish which are sold at abnormally low prices, ”he added.
