Kwaku Asare, a Ghanaian teacher based in the United States
The GST 400,000 filing fee imposed on all supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is too high and has the tendency to sow political corruption, said a Ghanaian professor based in the United States, Kwaku Asare.
All aspiring NDC flag holders are required to pay GST 400,000 as a filing fee, while aspiring women must pay GHS 200.00, and persons with disabilities who aspire to the same position must pay GHS 150,000.
The nomination form for the flag bearer slot is 20,000 GHS.
In addition, candidates in parliament must pay SGH 20,000 as a filing fee.
Women candidates in parliament will pay half.
The party made the decision at a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Thursday, November 29 at the party headquarters in Accra.
In an article published on Facebook shortly after the announcement, Professor Asare said, "420,000 GHS, it is a lot of money to pay for access to voting in a political party. Clearly, precisely and unambiguously, these exorbitant fees sow the seeds of political corruption. "
"We can not sit silently so that the seeds of corruption are planted only to find our voice when the planters reap their rewards."
"I propose that no political party be allowed to charge a filing fee in excess of 10% of the annual salary of the office sought."
"In addition, I propose to completely abolish the filing fee if a candidate can obtain 100,000 signatures for the post of presidential flag bearer (10% of registered voters for parliamentary flag bearers)."
"Our Constitution is worried about" money ", but we seem not to pay attention to it. We must decide if we want to manage a democracy or a "monetary bureaucracy". "
