Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has blamed feminism for the growing cases of domestic violence suffered by women in marriage.
Talk to BBC Igbo, the actor said women were responsible for most incidents of domestic violence.
He lamented that women today do not know how to do the basic things women should know to keep their husbands.
“Feminism is not something black people are known for. Once a woman leaves her parents to meet her husband and take his surname, she must be submissive to him. If she wasn’t married, she can do whatever she wants.
“Women walk and show their buttocks, so men can find them. If you see such a woman and express your interest in marriage, she begins to walk well. Our women are now diving into feminism these days, ”he said.
Pete Edochie said it is unfortunate that some women do not keep their husbands’ names and some of them do not know how to cook.
“My mother was not educated but she cooked all kinds of soups including bitter leaves, Oha, Ogbono, Okro, Egusi, Ukwa, and everything in between. My father always rushed home to eat what his wife had cooked. Today our women can no longer even cook. Women who cannot cook are not supposed to call themselves women. And feminism is what gets women beaten up in marriages.
“You complain to a woman and she retorts. It gets unbearable, so you stretch your arm out and slap it. Domestic violence begins. I don’t like to see women cry because it hurts so much. But it is often the fault of the woman herself.
Edochie added that feminism has no place in Nigerian culture, adding that men don’t worship women like whites do.
“To be honest, women’s understanding is weak. I am not a misogynist but I have associated myself with it a lot, even at work. In the west, women could join forces and accuse a male colleague of assault. The man resigns. It cannot happen in our culture. As a young woman, if the pedestrians didn’t admire you, you would cry for fear of not being beautiful, ”the 74-year-old added.
Opening up to some foreign cultures he doesn’t conform to, Pete Edochie said that kneeling down to put a ring on a woman’s hands is a mistake.
He explained that any man who does this transfers the management of his family to the woman.
“I am a strong supporter of culture. It is like kneeling down when entering a church because there is a higher being to whom you are paying homage. Men climb trees to harvest palm wine. What does it look like if women do the same? Today, women dictate to me.
“It wasn’t like that these days. The way women talk to men today is not the way we were brought up. My mother has never been beaten. My wife and I have been married for 52 years. I never beat her. My five married sons do not beat their wives.
