Ferrari has equipped the new Control Electronics cars with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, in anticipation of the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend.

Leclerc seemed ready to win the win in Bahrain before suffering a motor problem during the finals. He finished third after being saved by a safety car, while Max Verstappen progressed quickly.

Ferrari later confirmed that the problem was caused by a short circuit with an injection control unit, which the team claims to have never encountered before.

The 21-year-old driver's engine is expected to be used in China this weekend, but he and team-mate Vettel, as well as Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen of Haas have won their second electronic order of the season.

They are one of the six parts that make up the powertrain, and drivers are only allowed two per season before penalties on the network are imposed.

Leclerc had other problems during the second work session since he missed a good part of the session after a suspected problem of engine cooling.

Problems allowed him to finish in 7th place, 0.8 seconds behind Vettel.

Meanwhile, Honda was forced to change Daniil Kvyat's Toro Rosso engine after detecting an anomaly in the data during the FP1.

This change meant he was limited to 20 laps in the second session, finishing P13.

It was the first in-season engine change for the Japanese manufacturer in 2019.

The two Renault drivers have chosen new MGU-K to try to overcome the problems posed by this element, as well as Lando Norris, who joins his teammate at McLaren, Carlos Sainz, to make the change.
