Ferrari owes its early form to Bahrain engine mode

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto said Friday's opening day in Bahrain was skewed in favor of the Scuderia, thanks to the team's use of more powerful engine modes than Mercedes.

Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc comfortably dominated the timesheets during the two free practice sessions at Sakhir, the pair ahead of rivals Silver Arrows.

However, Binotto called the results of the day "misleading".

"I think the delta you may see with others is not too important, and I think tomorrow will definitely be a tougher battle," said Scuderia's team manager. . "The others will be very strong tomorrow.

"I think it's pretty obvious, and you can see the GPS data and the speed in a straight line, we were certainly pushing different engine modes compared to what others were doing today.

"I think today's results are misleading, I expect a different situation tomorrow in qualifying, I expect our main competitors to be very strong again.

"But for what we have seen today, the situation is quite different from that in Australia, which means we have made progress against Australia.

"We still have to work on our car based on the feelings and data we have today."

Binotto's comments raise the question of why Ferrari has decided to fuel more power. The most plausible explanation is probably his desire to check his engine systems following the rumor that he had engine trouble in Melbourne.

Yesterday, Vettel revealed that Ferrari had done due diligence in dealing with its performance deficit in Australia and had found "some answers".

"I think we have improved our situation after Australia, and this one is a completely different track," Binotto concluded.

"So, let's say we do not have at least the problems we've had in Australia because of the track on one side and the change we've made, that's where we have to start."
