LONDON – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is in talks to forge close ties with Renault Financial Times reported on Saturday, citing several people informed of the talks.
The newspaper said automakers were looking to join forces to address the structural challenges facing the auto industry. The Wall Street Journal posted a similar story Saturday afternoon.
An agreement could eventually lead FCA to join the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance in the future, sources told the newspapers, while warning that this result would imply a complicated trajectory that would imply victory over Nissan.
FCA also began cooperative talks with the PSA group on platform sharing, but talks with Renault went beyond technology sharing and progressed faster than those with PSA. Financial Times I said.
Discussions with Renault are ongoing and could still break, sources said Financial Times, warning that a number of structures and options are under study. It is unclear to what extent Nissan has been involved so far in the talks, the newspaper said.
Reports on FCA's discussions with PSA began to emerge in March.
In a statement to Bloomberg, PSA said it was open to "opportunities that would create long-term value," but on the basis of the 2018 financial results, "there is no hurry to finalize a partnership," according to one email.
