"Fiat will join Tesla to avoid European fines"

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) and Tesla have drawn up a plan to prevent the former from being fined for violating EU emissions rules, the FT reported.

According to the newspaper, the cars of the electric car manufacturer Tesla will be counted in the fleet of vehicles of the FCA.

It will allow the Italian manufacturer to offset the carbon dioxide emissions of its cars compared to those of Tesla, by reducing its average figure to an authorized level.

FCA stated that it "would optimize the compliance options offered by the regulations".

The automaker continued: "FCA is committed to reducing emissions from all our products (…) the buying group offers the flexibility to deliver the products that our customers are willing to buy while managing the respect of the least expensive approach "

There is no indication of the specific amount that FCA has agreed to pay to Tesla.

Last year, FCA, which lagged behind its competitors in electric vehicle manufacturing, planned to spend € 9 billion over four years to develop electric cars that meet global emissions standards.

According to EU rules, carmakers may badociate with competing companies to build what is known as open pools, but none has yet done so. ;now.

The FCA has asked to establish an emissions pool with Tesla and Alfa Romeo in February.
