Filtration system stops zebra mussels

The pumping system allows water to flow between Sucker and Snail lakes while filtering zebra mussels or their larvae.

The pump and filtration system filters adult zebra mussels and their laying larvae with a 40 micron filter. The filter also improves the quality of the water flowing from Sucker Lake to Snail Lake.

Lindesy Roberts-McKenzie, project engineer for Elliott Hendrickson, said the system was designed, in part, to address the biology of the zebra mussel. "Zebra mussels stay dormant when the water temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit," Roberts-McKenzie said. "The system only works when the conditions encourage the mussels to become active."
