Cypriot health officials said on Monday that the balance of symptoms badociated with influenza A since December has been raised to 13, making it the worst epidemic in a decade, although the virus is easing.

The Cypriot Ministry of Health has issued a statement that influenza activity remains relatively high, with a death recorded in the last 24 hours, while 58 serious cases have been recorded and treated at the hospital.

"There are eight serious cases currently treated in intensive care units in general hospitals – no serious cases of influenza have been admitted in the last 48 hours," said a health ministry.

The last deceased patient (a 67-year-old woman) "belonged to a vulnerable group and had been in intensive care for three weeks with a serious underlying illness."

The ministry said influenza activity since February 1 "remains high, although for four weeks it has been declining."

"Globally, the virus has been declining for three weeks compared to previous ones. This decrease is particularly visible in the infant population, "the statement said.

Health authorities said that there was "no reason to panic" because fewer people were treated at the hospital.

"The vast majority of severe cases are patients with multiple underlying chronic health conditions and complex medical histories."

The authorities have stated that influenza vaccine remains the best way to prevent infection with the virus, especially for vulnerable groups.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus and very different from colds, which is less serious.

If you are healthy, it is normally not dangerous, but some strains of the flu can sometimes cause serious illness in some people.

The Ministry of Health has published preventive measures for the public to follow

• Ensure good ventilation of your home

• avoid staying in overcrowded places

• When you cough or sneeze, use a tissue in front of your mouth, then wash your hands

• Wash your hands well and often

• No smoking

• If your child is sick, do not send him to the nursery or school at least 48 hours after the disappearance of fever and symptoms.
