First data protection in Africa in Accra

Accra, June 12, GNA – The Ministry of
Communications and Ghana Data Protection to Host First Africa Data
Conference on Protection and Privacy in Accra.

The two-day conference, scheduled for June 26
27, was in partnership with the African Network for Data Protection
Authorities to mark a milestone in the roadmap to promote
the enactment of data protection and privacy laws in Africa.

It will bring together international actors
stakeholders, including; the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to
Privacy, the African Union, the East African Community, the European Union and
British Commissioner for Information.

Patricia Adusei Poku, Commissioner
of data protection, said that the countries of the Africa region were
enact data protection and privacy laws and establish
The authorities face the increasing use of technology, at the pace of
digitization and the exponential growth of activity in the global cyberspace.

She said that the conference would be together
authorities established in Africa and their counterparts in the global North for
thought leadership, perspectives, best practices and high-level strategic content,
providing an essential platform for promoting Africa's action in favor of data protection
and privacy laws in Africa.

Topics to discuss include:
ethical approaches and treatment for the overall good, the protection of data and
privacy and financial inclusion in Africa, data protection and cyberspace.

The Commission was created under the
Data Protection Act (Law 843), 2012, to protect the privacy of individuals
and personal data by regulating the processing of personal information.

Article 27 of the Law makes it compulsory
all those who process personal data to register with the Commission.

Ms. Adusei Poku expressed her concern about
organizations that did not comply with the law, adding that it was an offense
for institutions that processed data without registration with the Commission.

She said that it belonged to the management of
organization to make their staff aware of the need to protect personal data
unauthorized disclosure and unlawful use.

The Commissioner declared that he was protecting
fundamental data for fundamental human rights, emphasizing that personal data
in the wrong hands could cause serious damage, damage and repercussions.

She called on all stakeholders who had not
registered with the Commission, as there would soon be a surprise
exercise to check the institutions.
