The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, paid tribute on Monday to a genocide memorial held on the sidelines of an economic forum in Rwanda, a highly symbolic gesture in bilateral relations that was badly marred by the 1994 bloodshed. .

The Genocide Memorial Twitter account posted a video of Tshisekedi, elected in January, laying a wreath at the Kigali Memorial, a diplomatic first.

A rights group, the Struggle for Change (Lucha), also drew attention to the bloody past of the DRC, which includes the brutal colonial occupation of Belgium and two civil wars over last 25 years.

"When will there be commemorative monuments and an official commemoration for the millions of Congolese dead, from (Belgian king) Leopold II to the wars and violence of the past 25 years?" he asked.
