The Sefwi-Wiawso Divisional Police Command arrested five people for stealing two-week-old twin babies in Punikrom, Waiwso Municipality, Northwest Region.
The suspects are Paulina Owusu 26, Haruna Yusif 36, Stephen Owusu 32, Kofi Nkrumah, 24 and Sampson Addai, 33.
Confirming the arrest to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Christopher Dzakel, commander of the Waiwso division, said four of the suspects had been arrested earlier, but Kofi Nkrumah , then at large, was subsequently arrested.
According to him, her outfit had information on March 14, 2021 that Paulina Owusu of Sefwi-Boako under her jurisdiction had hired four men to steal a baby from her and that she had rented an apartment for them.
He said he quickly organized his men to rush to said place as he didn’t want anything to happen to the babies.
The commander said the suspects were subsequently arrested and, during questioning, confirmed that Paulina Owusu hired them to steal the babies from her.
DSP Dzakel said the five men were sent to Waiwso Magistrates’ Court where they were taken into custody to reappear on Monday, March 29, 2021.
Abena Owusuaa, mother of the twins in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the main suspect (Paulina Owusu) came to her home claiming to sell her meat only to arrange to steal her babies.
She revealed that one of the babies had a problem in one of her legs and was referred to Komfo Anokye University Hospital in Kumasi for treatment, but due to financial difficulties she was unable to do it.
