A fire ravaged a dormitory of the training center of the youth teams of one of the biggest football clubs of Brazil, causing 10 deaths.

The victims have not yet been named, but would include young players staying at Ninho de Urubu, the training ground of the Flamengo football club in Rio de Janeiro.

Three teenagers were also injured, one seriously.

The cause of the fire is under study.

However, a young player said that the fire was declared in an air conditioner in his room.

"The air conditioner caught fire and I ran out," said Felipe Cardoso, under-17 player. "Thank God, I managed to run and I'm still alive."

Flamengo is one of the most important and best-known clubs in Brazil on the international scene. They play in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A league where they finished in second place last season.

The club's president, Rodolfo Landim, told reporters that it was "without a doubt the worst tragedy of this club" of its 123-year history.

"The most important thing now is for us to try to minimize the pain and suffering of these families."

The legend of Brazilian football, Pelé, described the club as "a place where young people pursue their dreams".

"It's a very sad day for Brazilian football," he tweeted.

The Brazilian striker and Paris Saint-Germain player, Neymar, released the club's blazon on Instagram by writing: "My feelings".

President Jair Bolsonaro, who is undergoing treatment for pneumonia, tweeted a statement from the hospital "in solidarity" with families in mourning.

He said the tragedy has made young victims "on the path of achieving their professional dreams".
