Heavy rains may yield a dam in southern Malawi when there was no break, officials said Thursday, prompting residents to go to the shelter.
The warning was given after Cyclone Idai struck neighboring Mozambique on Friday, killing 242 people.
The winds and rains caused by hurricanes also ravaged eastern Zimbabwe, where more than 100 people died.
In Malawi, the storm hit nearly one million people and more than 80,000 people were displaced, according to WHO.
The Chagwa Dam "has seen one of its major embankments eroded by heavy rains," said the Department of Homeland Security in a statement. "It is likely to burst in case of heavy and incessant rains."
The statement advised local residents of the country of southern Africa to evacuate "in case of emergency".
