PHOTO VIA ADOBE IMAGESIn Florida, 92 cases of hepatitis A were reported last week, bringing the total to 1,312 this year, according to information posted on the website of the Ministry of Health.
Cases were reported last week in counties ranging from Miami-Dade to Escambia, with persistent high concentrations in the Tampa Bay area and Central Florida.
The number of cases of hepatitis A has more than doubled from 2016 to 2017, then almost doubled again in 2018 to reach 548 cases, according to the Ministry of Health.
But the total of the first five months of 2019 exceeded those years. The disease, which can cause liver damage, can be transmitted through food or drink contaminated with feces from people with the disease. Health officials urged Floridians to be vaccinated against the disease.
Until Saturday, Pinellas County reported the highest number of cases this year, with 254. It was followed by Pasco County, with 248 cases; Orange County, with 109 cases; Hillsborough County, with 97 cases; and Volusia County, with 93 cases.
