Ghana needs to prioritize food safety issues in order to make progress in achieving the sustainable development goals of zero hunger, health and well-being, as well as clean and affordable energy.

Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, who made the call on Friday, said the country is currently facing crucial problems to ensure food security.

Dr Agyemang-Manu spoke in Accra on the theme: "Food security, everyone's business", at the symposium held in Maiden in 2019 to celebrate World Food Day.

The symposium should identify and discuss relevant food security issues along the food chain, proposing recommendations that the responsible institutions can implement and report to the next World Food Day.

On December 20, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 73/250 proclaiming World Food Safety Day.

He congratulated the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and his collaborator, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), for organizing the symposium, during which would address issues related to food safety, from farm to fork.

He said the threat posed by foodborne diseases to achieving the SDGs' goals was enormous, stating that every citizen had a key role to play in achieving the ultimate goal of food sustainability. .

In addition, all stakeholder institutions must commit to implementing policies and legislation that support sustainable food systems.

The minister said efforts have been made over the years to achieve the goal of food safety. However, much remained to be done, and together, "we can do more".

"So if we look to the future, it is essential to continue to strengthen food control systems," he added.

Dr. Agyemang-Manu said the country's top priority was to overcome food waste due to contamination.

As a country, he said, "we are wasting about one third of all food produced for human consumption because of poor storage, inappropriate means of transportation and commercial practices such as the adulteration".

He called on the experts to deliberate and make recommendations that are applicable and not for books and shelves.
