The federal government has confirmed the pardon granted to Rahma Hussein, originally from Kano, convicted of murder.

In 2014, at the age of 16, the married child was charged with culpable homicide after killing her husband to protest her forced marriage.

She stabbed the deceased, Tijjani Basiru, to death in the neighborhoods of Darmanawa, in the Tarauni local government area.

Rahma was married by her father. Three days later, as Tijjani tried to get intimate, a struggle that ensued caused her to disappear.

A statement released on Sunday by Umar Gwandu, spokesperson for the Minister of Justice, announced that Rahma and 30 other detainees had been released from the Kano Correctional Center.

Gwandu said the Presidential Committee on Correctional Center Reform and Decongestion visited the facility.

The team paid fines to detainees convicted of minor offenses and also looked at “special cases”.

Nineteen were released after payment of fines by the Ministry of Justice; 3 released after payment by the Buni Yadi Foundation; 2 released after payment by Policy Vault Africa. Seven were released due to their old age.

Gwandu said the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has drawn the attention of the committee chair, Judge IU Bello (rtd) to Rahma’s case.

“Representatives of UNODC and the Buni Yadi Foundation were also present to lend their voice and support for Rahma’s release,” the statement added.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has pledged that the state government will support his rehabilitation process.

On October 30, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami inaugurated the Committee for Reforms and Decongestion.

The presidential body facilitated the release of more than 10,000 detainees.
