Local authorities in southern France have evacuated thousands of campers from a very popular camping area after high winds increased the risk of forest fires raging nearby.

More than 2,500 campers were evacuated from campsites in Argeles-sur-Mer, outside the city of Perpignan, near the Spanish border, at the beginning of the holidays, announced the local authorities.

No one was injured and the evacuees are taken care of at three sites, including two gymnasiums.

The cause of the fire that erupted earlier Monday is not clear. Two Canadair water bombers and thirty vehicles are used to extinguish the fire. But bursts of 70 kilometers at the hour complicated the task.

Argeles-sur-Mer boasts to be the "camping capital" in summer and sees its population increase from 10,000 to 150,000 people.

An employee of the Dauphin campground, which can accommodate 1,000 people, said all of his clients had been evacuated to designated areas by firefighters and that there had been no material damage.
