CHARLESTON – A former substance abuse counselor pleaded guilty to illegal distribution of fentanyl.
According to a statement by US lawyer Mike Stuart, David Reeves, 51, of Beckley, pleaded guilty to distributing fentanyl.
Reeves admitted giving fentanyl patches to a patient with whom he had an inappropriate relationship at the Charleston treatment center, where he was a counselor, the statement said.
Reeves admitted to stealing his wife's spare parts. Reeves knew that the patient for whom he was stealing the patches was being treated for opioid addiction, the statement said.
"People with a substance use disorder need treatment and support," Stuart said. "It is inadmissible and intolerable for anyone who is able to help people with substance-related disorders to continue to feed their addiction further."
Reeves will be sentenced on May 15 and could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
According to the statement, the case stems from the formation of detection and detection of opioid-related fraud, an initiative of the Department of Justice aimed at identifying and prosecuting those who contribute to the opioid crisis.
