Former CFTC Commissioner Bart Chilton dies at age 58

Bart Chilton, former commissioner of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission and defender of cryptocurrency regulations, has pbaded away.

A family member told CNBC that Chilton's death was due to complications of pancreatic cancer. He was 58 years old.

Chilton was a frequent guest on CNBC and wrote for the CNBC website. Most recently, he hosted the "Boom Bust" show for the RT America television channel.

Chilton worked at the CFTC from 2007 to 2014. He was appointed to this position by President George W. Bush and was renamed by President Barack Obama.

He headed the Advisory Committee on Energy and the Environment and the Global Markets Advisory Committee. He is remembered for his years at the CFTC for his criticisms of high-frequency trading, which he called "cheetah" traders.

High frequency trading refers to the use of computer programs to get in and out of positions very quickly – sometimes in fractions of a second.

In recent months, Chilton has written for Forbes on topics ranging from cryptocurrencies to financial regulation.

CFTC President Chris Giancarlo said in an article published on Twitter Sunday that Chilton's death was "sad news for all of us".
