A well-known former radio DJ in South Africa has been denied bail after appearing in court on charges of incitement to violence following the imprisonment of ex-President Jacob Zuma.
In a video posted on social media, Ngizwe Mchunu – a staunch supporter of Mr. Zuma – called for the release of the former president.
Mr. Mchunu denied that he intended to create a disturbance.
Prosecutors say he is among a dozen key instigators of the violence that has left more than 200 dead and thousands of businesses looted.
Mr. Zuma is serving 15 months in prison for contempt of court.
Meanwhile, the South African Transport Minister has denied that the looting was the result of the government’s failure to tackle economic problems.
In an interview with BBC HardTalk, Fikile Mbalula described the unrest as a well-orchestrated coup attempt.
