Former McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh joins Aston Martin

Former McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh is expected to join Aston Martin in the new role of CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies from October 1.

Whitmarsh’s new role will oversee the strategic director of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team as well as the establishment of a new branch of the company that will use his F1 experience to provide engineering and manufacturing services.

Whitmarsh, 63, worked at McLaren for 25 years between 1989 and 2014, including a period as CEO of the McLaren Group and team manager from 2008 to 2014.

He worked closely with Lewis Hamilton in his first winning season in 2008 and helped launch McLaren Applied Technologies, which will compete with Aston Martin Performance Technologies.

Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll believes Whitmarsh can help his team win the F1 world championship.

“Martin will take on senior leadership responsibilities and assist and support me in defining the new strategic direction of Aston Martin Performance Technologies and its subsidiaries, including the crucial objective of leading the transformation of Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team into a Formula 1 World Championship winning organization over the next four to five years and turn it into a billion pounds company over a similar period, ”said Stroll.

“Martin has enjoyed a long, successful and high performance career spanning the motorsport, automotive, aerospace, marine and renewable energy sectors. In addition, he is a proven winner in Formula 1. So he’s the perfect fit for the job to work with me and our management team to lead and inspire our staff to future success, on and off the track. ”

Whitmarsh added: “I am delighted to have been appointed by Lawrence to the role of Group General Manager of the new Aston Martin Performance Technologies, effective October 1, 2021.

“I have known and admired Lawrence for many years, and have always been extremely impressed with his tremendous business acumen and seemingly inexhaustible ambition. Likewise, I have always respected “Team Silverstone”, if I may call it that, who have often hit above their weight under their various previous incarnations, and who now have the weight with which to hit harder than never.
