Former Liverpool winger Maxi Rodriguez backed the Reds to win the Champions League final against Tottenham.

Argentina followed the same career path as Mauricio Pochettino – leaving the Old Boys from Newell to Espanyol – and revealed that he would support Jurgen Klopp's team on June 1st.

Addressing Fox Sports in Argentina, the attacking player also admitted what he thought of Liverpool's current configuration and English football.

Rodriguez said: "Fair play is different in England and you have to learn fast and respect it, when I went to Liverpool I had to adapt.

"I played with Pochettino, but I want Liverpool to be champion.

"Anfield is one of the best stadiums I've played in. The atmosphere and the people are incredible."

The 38-year-old veteran, who won the League Cup at Merseyside, then described his admiration for Kop icon Steven Gerrard.

"Steven Gerrard is a legend and a very simple guy," he said.

"In Liverpool, the fans were intense for 90 minutes but after that, in the street, they are very respectful.

"I played in Liverpool with very good players like Luis Suárez, (Javier) Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt."

The Argentine striker continued: "English football now has a well-defined strategy and long-term plan.

"You can see the results, the four finalists in Europe are English and they performed well at the last World Cup.

"Liverpool could not win the Premier League because of the way Manchester City were playing – I love the way Liverpool are playing – this kind of competition can only make both teams better."

The men of Klopp will face the Spurs in Madrid next weekend, while Rodriguez is still working in the Primera division.

His current contract with his boyhood club, Old Boys, will expire in 2020.
