Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who made the announcement at the workshop, said the framework's information would serve as a feedback mechanism for future commitments. and interventions in terms of training and capacity building for journalists to tackle the phenomenon once and for all. all.
A permanent multi-stakeholder committee should be formed and charged with ensuring that there is a safe and conducive environment for the practice of responsible journalism in the country.
The Stakeholder Meeting was organized by the Ministry of Information in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to solicit input into the draft framework and validate it later, to ensure safe and responsible journalism in the country.
Stakeholders came from 21 institutions, including the Ghana Association of Journalists, the National Media Commission, journalism training institutions, the School of Communications and the Ghana Bar Association.
The other groups are the Armed Forces, the National Peace Council, the National House of Chiefs and the National Commission for Civic Education, media actors such as the Association of Independent Broadcasters of Ghana, the Association of Private Newspapers of Ghana, the Association of Sports Writers of Ghana and targeted civil society organizations. on the media and human rights.
The information minister said the number of journalists attacked around the world was worrying. It was therefore prudent for the global community to examine the causes and develop viable solutions.
He stressed that the issue of attacks on responsible and safe journalism for journalists had two aspects, saying that journalists should operate in a free environment, while, in the same spirit, they were not supposed to encroach on the rights of other members. public.
In a speech, Mr. Ronald Affail Monney, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, described the stakeholder engagement as a special day in the annals of journalistic practice in the country, which aimed to combat disturbing trends attacks on journalists. promised the Association's unwavering support for a good cause.
In Ghana, 17 journalists were attacked in a short time, noting that such atrocities tend to tarnish the image of the country's democracy and undermine the practice of journalism, given that the country has acquired a great reputation as a standard measure and point of reference for journalistic practice in Africa.
He expressed his joy that the country is moving from rhetoric about the fight against media attacks to interventions that can guarantee the safety of journalists and contribute greatly to the survival of democratic society.
