The French government will impose a tax of up to 18 euros on airline tickets for all flights departing from French airports. The proceeds will be used to finance less polluting means of transport.
The move, which will take effect from 2020, will result in a 1.5 euro tax on economy clbad tickets on domestic and European flights, with the highest rate applied to business clbad travelers traveling outside the block. said Minister of Transport Elisabeth, Borne.
The new measure is expected to yield around € 182 million a year, which will be invested in greener transport infrastructure, including rail, she said.
It will apply only to outgoing flights and not to those entering the country, added Borne.
Flights to Corsica and the French Overseas Departments, which rely heavily on air routes for their existence, will be exempted.
A similar tax was introduced in Sweden in April 2018, which imposed additional fees of up to 40 euros on each ticket to reduce the impact of air transport on the environment.
Air France shares fell sharply by nearly 4%. Its German competitor, Lufthansa, also gave ground, its shares falling by 2.50%.
Air France criticized this measure which, according to it, "would strongly penalize its competitiveness" at a time when the company had to invest, in particular in the renewal of its fleet, to reduce its carbon footprint.
