A French anesthetist, accused of poisoning 24 patients during surgeries, was released and will be placed under judicial supervision until the end of his trial, which has not yet been fixed. Prosecutors had requested his pre-trial detention.

The Besançon Court of Appeal confirmed the decision of a lower court authorizing Federic Péchier to continue living under judicial supervision, as he has done since March 2017, the date of his indictment.

Péchier is accused of altering the intravenous fluid pockets administered to 24 patients between 2008 and 2017. Patients aged 4 to 80 years suffered a heart attack – nine of which resulted in death.

Prosecutors argue that Pechier provoked attacks in order to intervene and badert his skills, supposedly to discredit his colleagues, with whom he was in conflict.

Pechier's legal defense team stated that there was no evidence that cardiac arrests of patients had anything criminal about them. Prosecutors say that the accused is the only thing in common with all cases.

As part of the judicial review, Péchier is not allowed to practice medicine or go to the city of Besançon or the neighboring city where he lived. He currently lives with his parents near Poitiers.
