The French health agency responsible for monitoring the use of drugs said that all products containing paracetamol, an badgesic, will have to carry a warning indicating the dangers of overdose of the chemical.

Paracetamol is frequently prescribed by French doctors in the treatment of pain and fever. It is the active ingredient of more than 200 commercially available drugs.

Manufacturers must have nine months to change the packaging to comply with the new rules.

Products containing only paracetamol should carry the warning "Overdose = Danger" and the statement: "Take more than the recommended dose may damage your liver", both in red.

The new packaging should also indicate the maximum allowable single dose, the maximum intake per 24-hour period, the minimum delay between two administrations of the product and a warning to avoid taking other products containing paracetamol at the same time.

The French medical monitoring agency pointed out that, used correctly, paracetamol was an effective way to control mild pain and fever. Overdoses of paracetamol are however the main factor of liver disease in France.

One billion packages of paracetamol products are consumed each year by the French, an increase of more than 50% over the last ten years.
