The investigating judges ordered the release of two police officers detained since November 30 for the savage beating of music producer Michel Zecler, according to a judicial source quoted by the AFP news agency.

The source said the two police officers would be subject to strict judicial control, with a ban on contacting the victim and other people under investigation, holding a weapon, and practicing police work.

In addition, the officers were prohibited from entering the 17th arrondissement of Paris, where the producer’s music studio is located, and will also have to pay a deposit of 5,000 euros.

At the end of their questioning at the Paris court on Friday and Monday, the two police officers filed a request for release with the investigating judges, who granted it. The prosecution did not oppose their request, which was placed under strict judicial control, the judicial source said.

On November 21, Zecler, a black man in his early forties, was beaten by police at the entrance to his music studio and later on the street. The incident, captured on both CCTV and cellphone and published by online news site Loopsider, contradicts the initial police report on the arrest.

Four police officers were arrested, three of whom were specifically questioned for using racial violence and for making false statements. A fourth officer, suspected of having thrown a tear gas canister in the studio, was charged mainly with “willful violence of a person in a position of authority”.

The incident sparked outrage across France with celebrities and politicians denouncing the officers’ actions.
