A French Senate committee has recommended suing Alexandre Benalla, former security badistant to French President Emmanuel Macron, for perjury following a seven-month investigation into Benalla's violent behavior during a protest. of street.

During the presentation of their report on Benalla's actions, senators referred to the "major malfunction" of the president's office and said they thought they could prove that Macron's security had been compromised.
"What happened on May 1 now seems to be the tip of the iceberg," said Philip Bas, senator of the center-right opposition party The Republicans and chairman of the investigation committee.
It is now up to the Senate president to decide whether to follow up on the committee's recommendations and file a complaint with the prosecutor's office.
Taking an oath before Parliament is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years and a fine of € 75,000.
Benalla, a former security advisor, was eventually fired. Although nothing suggested Macron's wrongdoing, the French leader's rebellious reaction to the scandal caused his popularity rating to plummet.
