The Department of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has confirmed that Ghana is about to adopt French as a second language.

Although currently an English speaking country, the Government of Ghana has decided to adopt French as a second official language.

Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said at the opening session of the 2019 Francophonie Week that the education sector in Ghana would be reformed to inculcate the life of the community. ;French learning.

According to her, this will be done by promoting the learning of French in primary schools and at all other levels.

However, she lamented the limited learning and teaching materials, as well as the insufficient number of French teachers in the country. "We believe that the teaching and deep learning of French will benefit Ghana because we are bordered by three French-speaking countries; namely Togo, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, "said the minister.

In 2018, Ghana signed the linguistic pact with la Francophonie for improved technical support and capacity building in French teaching and learning.

Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey said that introducing French as a second language in Ghana would go a long way towards improving regional integration, particularly in Francophone neighboring countries.

She added that President Akufo-Addo aimed to give priority to the French language in Ghana by making this country a full member of the Francophonie.

Ghana is currently an badociate member of La Francophonie since joining in 2006.
