Frenkie de Jong said that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Lionel Messi in Barcelona, but said that he "was not sure" that he wanted to accept a request from Nike regarding the Appearance of his shirt in Catalonia.
Dutch international De Jong, 21, joined Barca on a £ 65 million contract in January. He will join the club this summer after spending the season at Ajax.
His arrival at the club is eagerly awaited at Camp Nou – with club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, confirming that De Jong's signature is part of a strategy to help the club prepare for life after Messi.
And the youngster already uses the Barca icon as a reference, addressing the details of the transfer with the Dutch publication Het Kontakt.
"At first, the interest went through my agent, who spoke to the clubs, but when it became more serious, I walked in," he said.
"Paris Saint-Germain was a good option, but Barcelona has always been a dream and I am happy with my five-year contract.
"If I succeed, then chances are I will never leave, just like Messi."
And although De Jong already has in mind his potential shirt number Barca, he has an aspect of his new kit with which he does not agree at the moment.
"In July, I sign my official contract in Barcelona and I am also introduced to the fans and the press," he said.
"Playing with 21 (as a team number) would be nice, because it's my number.
"The selection for the new season is not yet known, so I will have to wait and see.
"There is an idea to play with" Frenkie "on the back of the shirt. Nike prefers this from the point of view of merchandising. I do not know if I want.
