Fried foods have never been included in a healthy diet and a new study reveals that daily consumption is badociated with a "higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality" in American women.

Previous studies have shown a connection between fried food consumption and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, revealing that nearly a third of North American adults eat fast meals each day.

The new study examined the link between fried foods and the risk of death, whatever the cause, but especially heart disease and cancer. Researchers followed the dietary patterns of 107,000 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 enrolled in the US Women's Health Initiative between 1993 and 1998. A follow-up with the women took place in February 2017.

"We know that the consumption of fried foods is very common in the US and around the world.Unfortunately, we know very little about the long-term effects of fried food consumption on health" , explained the main author of the study, Wei Bao, badistant professor. of epidemiology at the University of Iowa, according to CNN.

The researchers examined the total consumption of fried chicken, fish / shellfish and other fried foods fried by women.

They found that eating fried foods on a regular basis increased the risk of death, regardless of the cause, especially for heart-related reasons. Women who ate one or more servings of fried foods a day had a higher risk of 8% compared to those who did not eat fried foods.

The largest increase was observed in the consumption of fried chicken. One or more servings a day were badociated with a 13% higher risk of death, and a 12% risk of cardiac death.

Researchers, however, found no connection between fried foods and cancer-related deaths.

"Reducing the consumption of fried foods, particularly fried chicken and fried fish / shellfish, could have a clinically significant effect across the spectrum of public health," the study concludes.
